Communal celebrations of the Sacrament of Penance take place during Advent (December) and Lent (March).
Catholics are obliged to confess their grave sins at least once a year (Code of Canon Law, canon 989). Frequent confession of all sins, including venial or lesser ones, is encouraged (canon 988 §2).
